Moo Moo Kow Diaper

Pocket diapers have been around since 1998 and are among the most popular modern cloth diapers.

Moo Moo Kow One Size Cloth Diaper is a modern pocket diaper with a stay-dry inner layer that keeps baby dry even overnight. This is a two-piece system consisting of:
1. a pocket diaper with a PUL waterproof outer layer and stay-dry suede cloth inner layer, and
2. absorbent inserts that are stuffed through the pocket opening.

It has a contoured shape and is fastened using either aplix (velcro tabs) or snaps.

The key advantages of a pocket diaper:
1. you can customise the amount of absorbent materials depending on your needs, and
2. it dries very quickly because the inserts are removed during laundry.

Being a one size diaper means Moo Moo Kow can be adjusted via 3 front rise snap buttons as baby grows. You can get a Small, Medium and Large cloth diaper all in one Moo Moo Kow, saving you lots of money.

This depends on your situation:
- the frequency of your baby's output, especially poo,
- whether you plan to cloth diaper baby during day and night, or during the day only, and
- whether you do your laundry daily or less often.

For full cloth diapering and daily laundry, you would need about 15 cloth diapers. Each day, baby would probably need about 6 to 10 sets. A young breastfed baby usually poos many times a day, so would need more diapers.

Each Moo Moo Kow Cloth Diaper includes 2 inserts. Inserts usually take longer than the pocket diaper to dry, so you would have extra ones for rainy days.

If you are completely new to modern cloth diapering, we recommend that you try out the Moo Moo Kow Starter Kit first, perhaps a mixture of Aplix and Snaps. After working out your baby's and your preferences, you may always get more diapers.

Our Starter Kits and Value Packs are great value for money. Check them out here.

Each has its pros and cons, so choose according to your situation. Here's the comparison:
Aplix:
Pros:
- Easy to use
- Perfect waist fit
Cons:
- Need to remember to close laundry tabs
- Generally less lasting than snaps
- Older baby / toddler can undo it easily (to overcome this, simply wear rompers or shorts over the diaper)
Suited for:
- Newborn baby – slimmer and easier to fit with Aplix
- Wriggly baby
- Night-time diaper changes
- Alternative caregivers such as Daddy, grandmother or babysitter

Snaps:
Pros:
- Generally more lasting than Aplix (Moo Moo Kow Aplix tabs are very lasting though!)
- No need to handle laundry tabs
- Hard for older baby / toddler to undo
Cons:
- Less perfect fit, when baby is in between snap sizes
- More challenging to use, need to remember the setting
Suited for:
- Older baby / toddler
- Use over more children
You may consider getting a mixture of Aplix and Snaps Moo Moo Kow Cloth Diapers to see which you prefer. Also, your preference may change as baby grows older.

Absolutely! Some Mummies prefer to cloth diaper full-time while some prefer to use cloth diapers for daytime home use only.

Of course, the more often you cloth diaper, the more you get out of your investment in Moo Moo Kow Cloth Diapers.

Most importantly, choose what works best for your baby and your family.

Should you need advice on successfully cloth diapering for outings and overnight, simply email us at hello@jeffandbelle.com.

During the first month, most babies tend to poo frequently, about 7 to 8 times a day. Breastfed newborns may poo even more frequently.

Therefore, it is common for Mummies to choose traditional cloth diapers or prefolds in the early days. And at night, many choose to use disposable diapers with a generous layer of diaper cream to ensure baby's skin is well protected in case he poos while sleeping.

In the second to third month, baby's poo will tend to be less often and "scheduled". Also, his thighs would have grown fuller to ensure a good fit in Moo Moo Kow Cloth Diapers. This is a good time to start using your pocket diapers.

Some babies are sensitive to disposable diapers because of added chemicals such as fragrance. Moo Moo Kow Cloth Diapers has no such added chemicals, are breathable and gentle on baby's sensitive skin. Many babies with sensitive skin have successfully used Moo Moo Kow Cloth Diapers, even overnight, with no rash.

However, a small minority of babies may be sensitive to suede cloth. If diaper rash develops or persists, please seek medical advice.

The outer layer of the diaper is made of waterproof and breathable PUL (polyurethane laminated) fabric, which is not warm for your baby.

Cloth diapers are a little bulkier than disposable diapers, yet not noticeable most of the time. They are bulkiest when you need to stuff extra inserts during night-time and for heavy wetters.

Both cloth and disposable diapers may leak. By choosing the appropriate fit and absorbency, leakages would be minimised.

Modern cloth diapers such as Moo Moo Kow have sturdy elastics at the thigh and back areas, and can contain explosive breastfed-baby poo very well, resulting in less leaks!

Pocket diapers also allow you to customise the absorbency for heavy wetters who may "outpee" disposable diapers overnight.

If you are facing leaks with your cloth diapers, please read the article on "How to Prevent Cloth Diapers from Leaking".

Whether baby is using cloth or disposable diapers, you should change her every 2 to 3 hours to keep her skin healthy and to prevent diaper rash.

During the day, you may choose to change the pocket diaper with insert OR only the insert after about 2 hours. The pocket diaper should be used for a maximum of 4 hours in the day.

At night, if baby is sleeping through, then you may use the diaper overnight, as long as sufficient number of inserts is used.

Please refer to FAQ #18 on "How do I use the inserts" for specific examples.

To continue cloth diapering outdoors, you would need a wet bag. This is a bag with a waterproof inner lining and zip to keep any odour and wetness in. After changing baby's wet diaper, simply put it into the wet bag and bring home for laundry.

Breastfed baby: The poo is usually runny and explosive, which Moo Moo Kow Cloth Diapers will be able to contain very well because of the sturdy elastics. This type of poo typically has no pungent smell and can be kept in a wet bag, then brought home to handle.
Older baby: The poo is usually solid. After changing baby, simply bring the cloth diaper to a nearby washroom and roll the solids into the toilet. Then keep the cloth diaper in a wet bag.

Poo should be disposed into the sewage instead of garbage system, and cloth diapering allows parents to practise this. Thank you for taking care of our environment!

To let an alternative caregiver use cloth diapers easily, select our cloth diapers with Aplix tabs. These are the easiest to put on, even on the wriggliest baby.

Also, remember to snap on the rise setting beforehand and pre-stuff the cloth diaper with sufficient insert(s). So the caregiver only needs to put the diaper onto baby and stick the Aplix tabs on.

You would also need to provide a conveniently-located diaper pail or wet bag, so that the caregiver knows where to place wet / soiled cloth diapers.

PUL means polyurethane-laminated fabric, a compound fabric made by laminating a cloth fabric to a thin film of polyurethane. (Source: Wikipedia) It provides waterproofness.
Moo Moo Kow uses breathable PUL to help your baby's skin stay cool even over long hours overnight.
We also use high quality PUL that can withstand occasional hot washes.

Suede cloth is a synthetic fabric that can wick wetness away from baby's skin. It is very stay-dry, even more so than microfleece (another commonly used fabric for cloth diapers.) This is why Moo Moo Kow Cloth Diapers are suited for baby's use overnight.
The suede cloth we use is easily washable, stain-resistant and pill-resistant, so Moo Moo Kow Cloth Diapers can remain in excellent condition wash after wash.

Microfibre is a synthetic fabric commonly used to make inserts for pocket diapers. It can absorb fluids rapidly and has high absorbency.

Hemp fabric is made from the hemp plant. It is highly absorbent (even more so than microfibre), durable and anti-bacterial. The more it is washed, the more absorbent and softer it becomes. After the initial wash, expect about 10% shrinkage.

It is usually mixed with cotton and highly popular in making diaper inserts and boosters -- for long hours and overnight diapering.

Inserts are absorbent multi-layer fabrics that are placed inside pocket diapers. They can be made from various materials such as microfibre, hemp, terry or bamboo.

Moo Moo Kow offers you with a range of inserts:
- Regular Microfibre Insert: Included in each Moo Moo Kow One Size Cloth Diaper. Use 1 for newborn or 2 for a heavy wetter
- One Size Microfibre Insert: Suitable for a bigger baby about 6 months old and above. Fold the flaps to focus on where absorbency is needed most. Recommended for naps and perhaps overnight.
- Hemp Insert: Suitable for a toddler above 1 year old and heavy wetter. Place behind a regular insert as a booster to last through naps and overnight.

Always place inserts inside the pocket of the cloth diaper. Do not place microfibre insert next to baby's delicate skin as it is very absorbent and could dry out her skin. This means the suede cloth layer should be next to baby's skin.

Microfibre absorbs faster than hemp, while hemp is more absorbent than microfibre. So when using both together, always place microfibre as the top layer (nearer to baby), then hemp behind it as a booster.

Here are 3 examples to give you a better idea:

Example A: Young Baby (1 to 6 months old)

During the day, use 1 Regular Microfibre Insert to maintain trimness. This usually lasts about 2 hours. After 2 hours or when the diaper is soiled, change baby into a clean pocket diaper with insert.

Alternatively, replace a wet insert with a clean regular insert. To keep baby's skin healthy, the pocket diaper should be used for a maximum of 4 hours in the day.

At night, use 1 or 2 pieces of Regular Microfibre Insert, depending on baby's pee volume and whether she is sleeping through the night.

Example B: Older Baby (6 to 12 months old)

An older baby pees more each time. During the day, continue to use 1 Regular Microfibre Insert to maintain trimness. Then replace the entire diaper or only the insert after it is saturated, as in Example A.

At night, use 2 pieces of Regular Microfibre Insert. Or upgrade to the One Size Microfibre Insert, which allows you to fold the flaps to get 6 layers of microfiber, wherever absorbency is needed most.

Example C: Toddler & Heavy Wetter (1 to 3 years old)

During the day, a heavy wetter may need the One Size Microfibre Insert.

To last through the night, use 1 One Size Microfibre Insert and 1 Hemp Insert (placed behind the microfibre).

Your baby may need a heavier duty insert when:
a) The insert is saturated after only 1 pee, or
b) The diaper is saturated and leaks within 2 hours in the day, or
c) The usual diaper and insert combination cannot last overnight.

When any of the above happens, you would have to consider upgrading to a One Size Microfibre or Hemp Insert.

Commercial diaper creams would accumulate (or build up) on the inner suede cloth layer over time, causing the diaper to repel pee and leak. So they are not recommended for use with Moo Moo Kow Cloth Diapers.
Our cloth diapers are designed to be breathable and stay-dry, so there is no need for diaper cream. Just remember to change your baby immediately after a poo.
If baby develops a persistent rash that does not clear up with using cloth diapers, do seek medical advice. If the doctor prescribes non-cloth diaper-friendly diaper rash cream or anti-fungal cream, then you would have to consider using disposable inserts or diapers in the meantime. When the rash clears up, you may always go back to cloth diapering.

Prewashing is important to let your new cloth diaper attain good absorbency. Ideally, prewash at least 3 times before first use.

For each prewash, it means washing the diaper with inserts and letting them dry, before the next prewash.

This are the washing instructions:
- Remove solids from the diaper into the toilet
- Remove the insert from the pocket diaper
- For Aplix diaper, fasten the laundry tabs
- Rinse or soak in cold water to prevent stains from setting. ( If you choose to soak, do so for at most 1 hour to prevent the PUL layer from delaminating.)
- Wash in cold, warm or hot water
- Use 1/4 of the recommended amount of detergent. No bleach and no softener.
- If necessary, do an extra rinse to ensure that all the detergent is rinsed out
- Dry on low heat or hang to dry

For more information and tips, read our "How to Wash Cloth Diapers" guide here.

Bleach breaks down the fibres in the cloth diapers, shortening their lifespan.

Softener coats the diapers, making them repel fluids and leads to leaks.

We recommend using powder detergent because liquid detergent may contain softener. Please ensure that there is no bleach, softener and enzymes in the detergent. If detailed ingredients are not listed on the packaging, then avoid using it on your cloth diapers.

For modern stay-dry cloth diapers, Nellie's All-Natural Laundry Soda is highly recommended. Check it out here.

To remove stains and odour, Nellie's All-Natural Oxygen Brightener does a great job. Find out more here.

The pocket diapers dry faster than the inserts. Both Moo Moo Kow microfibre and hemp inserts take about the same time to dry.
On a sunny day, the cloth diapers and inserts take about 4 to 6 hours to dry.
On a rainy day, the inserts may need 2 afternoons. Each Moo Moo Kow Cloth Diaper comes with 2 inserts, which is useful for rotation.

Shake any solid into the toilet bowl. The suede cloth is great for releasing anything fairly solid.

We highly recommend the mini toilet spray for spraying off solid waste, especially runny breastfed-baby poo.

Poo should be disposed into the sewage instead of garbage system, and cloth diapering allows parents to practise this. Thank you for taking care of our environment!

Newborn babies tend to have yellowish poo, which may stain the cloth diapers. Food, illnesses such as diarrhoea and medication may also result in stains.

The sun is a natural way of getting rid of stains easily, so simply dry the diapers under the sun when possible. After sunning several times, the stains will "magically" be reduced and disappear!

An alternative way of removing stains quickly is to use Nellie's All-Natural Oxygen Brightener found here.
